Here at Veda Medical, we understand the importance of wound care. We have over 30-year experience in treating all different kinds of wounds. Whether that be a post-surgical wound or a wound from an injury we are experts in handling all types of wounds for optimal healing and minimal scarring. Anytime you sustain a wound through surgical means or by an accident or a cut there is always the possibility for complications such as infections or scar tissue that could cause small body deformations or even pain after it has healed. We ensure that wounds are healed properly and ensure to minimize any healing complications. Dr. Mohan and Nurse Practitioner Andrew Vidal use the latest techniques and skills to ensure that incisions are inconspicuous, small, and properly sutured.

Scar Tissue

Scar tissue can not only be not esthetically pleasing to the person with the scar, but an accumulation of scar tissue can disrupt the person’s facia which can cause issues later on after the wound has healed. Sometimes due to improper wound care or issues with infections, the scar can create thick layers of scar tissue that can create an area of painful tissue. It is imperative to treat any wound properly from the very beginning. Once a wound has healed and has begun to scar improperly the damage can already be done. Scar tissue can cause an area of inflammation in the body that can flare up due to other injuries or even just anxiety which can result in painful symptoms. Experiencing issues with scar tissue can also happen during a surgical procedure with scar tissue developing inside the body. This is why it is imperative to find a skilled practitioner that will ensure they use only the best incision practices like Veda Medical. Sometimes if too much scar tissue is left behind post-surgery a patient will need to receive a follow-up surgery to break up scar tissue or remove it completely. So whereas scars can be visually unpleasant they also have real-world ramifications and cause major long or short-term issues. These painful symptoms can include;

  • Painful to the touch
  • Pain when moving the body part of the scar has affected
  • Generalized pain disorder
  • The appearance of scar causes emotional distress
  • The scar tissue can pull the facia causing strain on other areas of the body

At Veda Medical we ensure that your wounds are taken care of with the best technologies and treated with the highest level of care to minimize the issues of scarring.

How to Care for a Wound

Proper Incision

First and foremost you can trust that our highly skilled and trained practitioners will use the best techniques when closing an incision. This is something we guarantee at Veda Medical. To have optimal wound care you need to start with the best suturing and closing of an incision or injury. This will lay the groundwork for optimal wound healing.

Cleaning the Wound

If you are having surgery, you might feel inclined to take a nice hot bath or shower after. We understand that any surgical process can be taxing on the body and the importance of feeling and being clean. However, when it comes to incision sites you want to ensure you keep that wound clean and dry for two days to one week post-operatively. When you can shower or bathe with a wound is contingent on the size and severity of the incision or the wound. You will be equipped with post-op instructions informing you when it is safe to get the wound wet. Cleanliness will be key in healing any incision site or wound. Although you don’t want to be submerging the wound in a shower or bath you want to ensure it stays clean.

Steps for cleaning a wound:

  • Make sure to wash your hands before handling any bandages or going near the wound. This will lessen the chance of bacteria entering the wound and causing potential infections.
  • Make sure to use warm water and a clean cloth or damp gauze. We do not recommend using commercial skin cleansers, antibacterial soaps, hydrogen peroxide, alcohol, or iodine. You may be given a gentle cleansing solution to use at home, but otherwise, a mild soap or saline solution is all you need.
  • Ensure to gently clean around the wound but do not pick at any stitches or try to get underneath any stitches you might have. Try not to agitate the wound but rather provide a gentle rinse-off.
  • Once the wound is clean make sure the wound is dry. Once the wound is dry you can proceed with replacing the old bandaging with fresh new bandaging.

Changing Bandaging

If there is any fluid in the bandage, or the bandage gets wet, then it is time to put on a fresh one. If in doubt, put on a new bandage. You will be sent home with several to ensure that you have plenty on hand to last you until your next follow-up appointment. At a minimum, you will want to change your bandage once per day for the first few days post-op, or until your doctor instructs you that your wound no longer needs to be covered.

Limit Activities for Optimal Healing

Too much movement can cause the incision area or wound to re-open which can stop the healing process and even cause bleeding. Some bleeding can be normal and expected but patients should be careful to not completely re-open the wound. If you have re-opened a wound or an incision site you want to make sure to call our office immediately.

Avoid Sun Exposure

Until your wound is fully healed, direct sun exposure to the incision area should be avoided. UV light can cause a permanent scar to be left behind after the wound has healed. If you plan to be outdoors, make sure your wound is completely covered. Later, once the skin has healed, you may want to get in the habit of applying sunscreen to this area, at least until the scar has completely faded. Avoiding direct sunlight on a wound or incision site is important and the same rule of thumb should be applied with non-surgical procedures such as laser treatments or micro-needling. You want to give your body the adequate time it needs to heal before exposing it to harsh sun rays that might agitate it.

Will Scarring Occur?

The good news is that with proper care, wounds from cosmetic surgery should heal completely and will eventually be barely visible. Our skilled plastic surgeon will always make sure that incisions go in the most inconspicuous place possible, so even if a slight pink or white line is left behind, it will not be noticeable to anyone. Your doctor might also recommend skincare products that can speed up this process once the wound is completely healed.

Phases of Wound Healing

  • Hemostasis & Inflammation:
This is the initial clot that forms around the wound to control bleeding. At the site of injuryThrombin, prostaglandins, growth factors, and other cytokines are released which attract inflammatory cells to the area. The wound stops bleeding. The cells receive signals to begin the repair and regeneration of the injury site. Many conditions can interrupt or interfere with the hemostasis process such has to have diabetes or a blood clotting disorder. If you have one of these disorders make sure you discuss the condition with your doctor prior to treatment of any wounds or receiving any type of surgical or non-surgical cosmetic procedure.
  • Proliferation:
At this stage, the wound will begin to decrease in size or being to shrink. The wound fills with new connective tissue such as Granulation tissue which stimulates collagen production. This phase consists of rapid cell growth, production of an extracellular matrix (ECM) to fill the wound defect, and resurfacing of the wound bed.
  • Maturation & Remodeling:
The final phase occurs once the wound has closed. This phase involves the remodeling of collagen. Cellular activity reduces and the number of blood vessels in the wounded area decreases. Scar tissue is gradually remodeled.

Types of Wounds we Care for

Acute and Chronic Wound Care

Some wounds fall in the category of acute or chronic. Meaning that the wounds are there long-term or will never go away. When a patient, for example, needs an ostomy in place they will forever have an open wound in their abdomen for an ostomy bag to be placed. These are certain kinds of wounds that require certain kinds of care. Here at Veda Medical we are experts in treating these types of wounds and can help you navigate how to manage acute chronic wounds. We can also help if one of your acute or chronic wounds has become infected or you are having some type of complication. We understand the importance of having a wound care expert on your treatment team and we are here to help you with these issues.

Cosmetic Wound Care

Life happens and sometimes you or loved ones sustain a minor or even major injury. You can expect to get sufficient care at an emergency room or urgent care facility. However, at Veda Medical we ensure that your wound is treated utilizing the latest techniques for not only optimal healing but to minimize scarring. Often emergency rooms don’t have the time or expertise to utilize the best stitching methods that will allow for the smallest of scars. We care not only about healing the injury but also about the long-term effect the wound can have on the body. Also, a wound that was half haphazardly stitched together can create unwanted scar tissue that can become painful later on. We want to avoid these complications and give you the most top-notch wound care available.

Esthetics does matter and we understand the desire to have minimal scarring when it comes to post-surgical procedures or an accident or injury. Here at Veda Medical, we specialize in ensuring your wounds are properly treated and you are educated on how to continue caring for the wound or wounds you have. We also ensure that proper care and techniques are utilized when caring for a wound to limit the appearance of scars and scar tissue. In the unfortunate case that you should sustain a minor injury and require wound care Veda Medical will be the best option for you. If you require same-day care or are unsure of how to proceed and you have sustained an injury, please give our office a call today!

Hyperbaric Chamber

Sometimes we have patients come to Veda Medical after a poorly performed cosmetic procedure or they have a wound that is either not healing at all or not healing properly. If you find yourself in this unfortunate situation you are in good hands with Veda Medical. We are equipped to help get you on the path to recovery and healing. One tool we like to utilize at Veda Medical is the hyperbaric Chamber.

  • Hyperbaric Chamber-In a hyperbaric oxygen therapy chamber, the air pressure is increased 2 to 3 times higher than normal air pressure. Under these conditions, your lungs can gather much more oxygen than would be possible by breathing pure oxygen at normal air pressure. This extra oxygen helps fight bacteria. It also triggers the release of substances called growth factors and stem cells, which promote healing.
  • A hyperbaric chamber is an amazing tool that can help promote compromised tissue to heal. It can take several sessions to see results and when utilized consistently it can help aid in healing difficult wounds.
